The penultimate round of the 2024 Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place at Donington Park this weekend with Hager PBM Ducati rider Glenn Irwin looking to consolidate his title challenge.
The Ulsterman occupies third in the table following a superb win at Oulton Park last time out to claim his seventh victory of the season, and which thrust him right back into the frame to land the title as the PBM team go in search of their tenth BSB crown.
Irwin, who scored an additional podium to his victory at the previous round, is confident ahead of this weekend’s three races having won there earlier in the season so he will be looking to reduce the 39 point gap to current series leader Tommy Bridewell with six races remaining, especially now the revised points system is in place for the Showdown which climaxes the season.
Glenn Irwin: “I always look forward to going to Donington Park as it’s a track where we’ve had some amazing racing in the past couple of years. Having won there earlier in the season, we arrive with a good feeling, but perhaps I should have won more than one race so I’m confident. I really need wins now as the two riders in front have still a bit of a gap so three race wins would be ideal. I firmly believe we can leave Donington with a much-reduced gap to the leaders which would be the perfect scenario heading into the final round at Brands Hatch. The team have worked incredibly hard this season, so let’s go and enjoy this weekend and hopefully set up for a championship challenge.”
Frank Bird, Joint Team Owner: “The win and second place last time out at Oulton Park was a real morale booster for the team and also for Glenn and the vibe in the camp is fantastic going into the last two remaining rounds. We have closed the gap to the championship leaders and we were the highest point scorers from Oulton which is just what we needed. Donington Park should be a good one for us which we proved last time out there so hopefully we can make everything work again. We have always been very competitive there previously and that is the plan again and to keep the form rolling for the last six races.”
